Outdoor Adventures
Northwest Arkansas is an outdoor paradise, and it starts with the trails. The region boasts over 300 miles of paved and soft-surface trails, anchored by the Razorback Greenway — a 36-mile paved path connecting Bella Vista to Fayetteville through the heart of every major NWA city. For mountain biking, the options are world-class. Slaughter Pen in Bentonville offers flowy singletrack minutes from the downtown square. Coler Mountain Bike Preserve features progressive downhill runs, a pump track, and a skills park. The Back 40 loop in Bella Vista is a 40-mile backcountry epic through Ozark forest. Hobbs State Park near Rogers has miles of multi-use trails with lake views. Devil's Den State Park to the south provides rugged hiking, caves, and camping in old-growth forest. Kayaking and paddleboarding on Beaver Lake, Lake Fayetteville, and the Illinois River round out a region where getting outside is not just easy — it is a way of life.
Best Restaurants
The NWA food scene has exploded in recent years, driven by a diverse workforce and an influx of talented chefs. In Bentonville, The Preacher's Son occupies a converted church and serves inventive New American cuisine. Pressroom is a local favorite for wood-fired pizza and cocktails. Table Mesa delivers elevated Southwestern flavors. In Fayetteville, Leverett Lounge is a beloved neighborhood spot for brunch, and Bordinos serves classic Italian in a warm, upscale setting. Rogers' Railyard district is a food truck paradise — you can sample Korean BBQ, craft tacos, and artisan ice cream in one visit. Springdale is the dark horse of NWA dining: head to the Jones Center area and Emma Avenue for authentic Salvadoran pupusas, Marshallese food, and some of the best tacos in the state at places like Yeyo's El Mexicano. From farm-to-table fine dining to hole-in-the-wall ethnic food, NWA's restaurant scene rivals cities three times its size.
Arts and Culture
Northwest Arkansas has an arts scene that would be impressive in a city five times its size, and it is largely thanks to visionary investment. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville houses a world-class permanent collection spanning five centuries of American art — and admission is free. The Momentary, its contemporary-art satellite in downtown Bentonville, hosts rotating exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and artist residencies. In Fayetteville, TheatreSquared performs in a stunning facility and is one of the top regional theaters in the country. The Walton Arts Center brings Broadway touring shows, concerts, and performances year-round. First Fridays are celebrated across NWA cities with gallery openings, live music, and community events. Springdale's arts corridor along Emma Avenue is growing rapidly, with murals, galleries, and creative spaces transforming the downtown. Whether your taste runs to classical sculpture or experimental mixed media, NWA delivers.
Family Activities
NWA is one of the best family destinations in the South. Scott Family Amazeum in Bentonville is a world-class children's museum with hands-on STEM exhibits, a 3M tinkering hub, outdoor water play areas, and a working garden. Crystal Bridges has family art trails and regular kids' programming. Beaver Lake is perfect for family boating, fishing, and swimming at public beaches like Rocky Branch and Prairie Creek. The Razorback Greenway is wide, flat, and safe for family bike rides. Topgolf in Rogers offers entertainment for older kids and parents. Local farms like McGarrah Farms host fall pumpkin patches and berry picking. NWA's park systems are excellent — Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville all maintain modern splash pads, playgrounds, and sports complexes. During summer, community pools, outdoor movie nights, and food truck events keep families busy every weekend. The region is genuinely designed for families, and it shows.
Nightlife
When the sun goes down, NWA has more going on than most people expect. Fayetteville's Dickson Street is the undisputed nightlife hub — a walkable strip of bars, live music venues, and late-night restaurants. George's Majestic Lounge is one of the best small music venues in the South, hosting touring acts and local bands nearly every night. Smoke and Barrel offers craft cocktails in a speakeasy atmosphere. In Bentonville, the scene is more refined but growing quickly: Undercroft Bar serves creative cocktails in a moody basement setting, Pressroom has a strong bar program, and The Eleven at Crystal Bridges hosts evening events and concerts. Rogers' Railyard comes alive on weekends with live music and brewery taprooms like Ozark Beer Company and Hawk Moth Brewery. Springdale is building its nightlife scene with spots like Black Apple Crossing, Arkansas's first cidery. NWA nightlife may not be Austin or Nashville yet, but it is developing its own identity — and getting better every year.
Seasonal Events
NWA has four distinct seasons, and the event calendar takes full advantage of each one. Spring brings the Bentonville Film Festival, War Eagle Creek cleanup days, and wildflower hikes at Devil's Den. Summer is packed with live music at the Walmart AMP amphitheater, Fourth of July celebrations on the Bentonville square, and weekend float trips on the Illinois River and War Eagle Creek. Fall is arguably the best season in NWA — the War Eagle Craft Fair draws over 100,000 visitors, the Ozark foliage is stunning, and Bikes Blues and BBQ (one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the country) takes over Fayetteville. The Lights of the Ozarks illuminate the Fayetteville square from late November through New Year's. Winter brings holiday markets on the Bentonville square, ice skating at Lawrence Plaza, and cozy evenings at local breweries and restaurants. There is always something happening in Northwest Arkansas, no matter the time of year.
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking deserves its own section because it is a defining feature of Northwest Arkansas. The region has been designated a Silver-Level Ride Center by the International Mountain Bicycling Association — one of only a handful in the world. The trail network is extraordinary: Slaughter Pen offers beginner-to-intermediate flow trails right in Bentonville. Coler Mountain Bike Preserve is a gravity-fed playground with downhill runs, jump lines, and a pump track. The Back 40 in Bella Vista is a 40-mile loop through deep Ozark forest with technical rock gardens and sweeping ridge views. Kessler Mountain in Fayetteville provides a more rugged, natural experience. And new trails are constantly being built — NWA adds miles of singletrack every year, funded by a combination of Walton Family Foundation investment and community advocacy. The OZ Trails system connects many of these networks, making it possible to ride from city to city on dirt. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned enduro racer, NWA's trails are genuinely world-class.
