The Bentonville Farmers Market Got Ranked Number Four in America

USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards named the Bentonville Farmers Market the fourth-best farmers market in America in 2026, ahead of markets in Boulder and San Francisco. Worth knowing what that ranking is: it is a public vote, not an editorial panel. Nominations went up in March, voting ran to mid-April, and results landed April 22.

A public vote is a different thing from an expert ranking, and in this case I think it measures something more useful. Here is why the market earns it.

1. The Quality Is Actually High

I have been to a lot of farmers markets. Some are excellent and some are a parking lot with folding tables.

Bentonville's is genuinely good, and there is a structural reason. It is a producer-only market — vendors have to grow, raise or make what they sell, and the market manager does farm and workshop visits to verify it. That rule is written into the guidelines and it is enforced.

That matters more than it sounds. Plenty of markets let vendors buy wholesale and resell. You end up buying supermarket tomatoes at a premium under a tent. Not here.

What you get instead: honey from actual bee farms — this is the Natural State, we have plenty — flowers and vegetables grown locally, a metalworker making things on site, meat vendors selling by the half cow. I know the honey guy. That is the kind of market it is.

The market is operated by Downtown Bentonville Inc. and runs Saturdays through October 31, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on the downtown square. Downtown Bentonville Inc. puts the market at more than 100 vendors, with sales growing from about $280,000 in 2011 to more than $3 million today.

2. It Is Not a Farmers Market, It Is a Saturday

This is the real answer to why it ranks, and it is why a readers' vote captures it better than a produce-quality audit would.

There is music. There are events, games, things for kids. Something is always happening. People do not show up, spend fifteen minutes grabbing vegetables, and leave — they stay for hours, then go get ice cream, then wander the square.

It functions as a standing weekly gathering. If you are new to the area and you do not know anyone yet, that is not a small thing. You go, you see the same people, and eventually you know some of them.

I can order good honey online. I cannot order that.

3. What This Does for the Region

Northwest Arkansas already has a list of things it is known for: mountain biking, Walmart headquarters, a startup scene, the trails, the Razorbacks down in Fayetteville, affordable housing relative to most of the country.

This adds something different in kind. The other items on that list are amenities and economics. A farmers market ranked fourth in the country by public vote is evidence of community — people showing up, week after week, because they want to.

That is the thing people relocating here ask about most and the thing that is hardest to demonstrate. You can put trail mileage in a brochure. You cannot put in a brochure that a lot of us are new here and are figuring it out together on a Saturday morning downtown.

If you have not gone, go on a Saturday morning. It will tell you more about what living here is actually like than anything I can write down.
