Northwest Arkansas, TikToks and Pizza

Hemmed-in Hollow, in the Buffalo National River country northeast of here, is the tallest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians at roughly 209 feet. It is a strenuous hike of about five to six miles round trip from the Compton trailhead, or roughly a mile if you reach it from the river. That is one of four Northwest Arkansas things worth your attention — the others being a coffee roaster with three very different locations, a new pizzeria near Crystal Bridges, and a summer calendar that is fuller than most people realize.

A Summer With More Going On Than You Think

The region runs a genuinely deep summer calendar — concerts, festivals, outdoor events and hobby meetups across all the major cities. It is easy to miss if you are not looking, because a lot of people spend summer traveling elsewhere.

Fayetteville City Lifestyle publishes curated seasonal roundups if you want a shortcut to what is happening. The broader point holds: for a region this size, NWA carries an unusual amount of programming. Water parks, live music, festivals and easy access to nature are all in reach on the same weekend.

Airship Coffee Has Three Distinct Locations

Airship Coffee is one of the region's standout roasters, and its Bentonville locations are not interchangeable:

  • The Pumphouse on NW A Street — the one shown in the TikTok clip, and Phillip's favorite of the three
  • Airship at Coler, inside the Coler Mountain Bike Preserve — you have to walk or ride in
  • The Fifth Street shop — the original roastery and cafe

All three are good. The more interesting story is the competition: Airship, Onyx Coffee Lab and other local shops push each other hard on quality, and the region's coffee is better for it.

Bentonville also photographs unusually well, which is not entirely an accident — a lot of it was designed with that in mind.

Pizza Near Crystal Bridges

Pizza Lottie's opened this summer in the Crystal Flats development, a short walk from Crystal Bridges — a sister restaurant to Pizzeria Ruby in Johnson.

Pizza was the honest gap in NWA dining for a long time — it got the job done rather than drawing you across town. Pizzeria Ruby changed that, and Pizza Lottie's extends it into Bentonville. Of the pizzerias Phillip has tried, those two are the standouts.

Hemmed-in Hollow and the Case for Arkansas Outdoors

The waterfall is the headline, but the broader point about Arkansas outdoors is the one worth internalizing if you are considering a move.

From the Compton trailhead the hike is genuinely strenuous — most of the climbing comes on the way back out. From the river it is roughly a mile, so if you are floating that stretch of the Buffalo, build in extra time and hike up. One recent visitor put it at about an hour, and expect company. After heavy rain it runs hard.

This is the part that tends to surprise people. Arkansas is called the Natural State for a reason, and the iconic photographs — Hemmed-in Hollow, the Horseshoe Bend of the Buffalo River and the rest — come from this part of the world.

Here is the argument that matters most for anyone weighing a move: proximity. Colorado is spectacular, and getting to the spectacular part usually costs you an hour and a half, two hours, sometimes three or more. That is a real barrier. On a Saturday morning, a three- or four-hour drive out — and sometimes four back — is often the difference between going and not going.

In NWA the good stuff is frequently 30 to 45 minutes away. That changes the math entirely — the difference between outdoor recreation as an occasional expedition and something you do on an ordinary weekend, repeatedly, without planning it.
