Northwest Arkansas, TikToks and Me

Four TikToks this round — two of them about the same thing — and the theme running through all of them is that the internet has opinions about this region and is mostly right.

1. "Work Remotely, No Kids, Move to the Mountain Biking Capital"

The first one is a guy whose entire pitch is that he works remotely, has no dependents, and therefore moved to the mountain biking capital of the country.

That is not a niche choice anymore. It is one of the most common profiles I work with. Remote work plus no obligations plus a place where you can ride from your door is a legitimate life strategy, and Bentonville is close to the ideal version of it.

Live, work and play in one place is a phrase that gets used so heavily around here that it has lost some meaning. Watching someone actually structure their life around it is the useful version.

2. The Bike Lift, and a Correction Worth Making

Two of the TikToks are about the OZ Trails Bike Park in Bella Vista, and the second one is the more interesting.

In the first, the creator called it America's first bike lift. In the follow-up, she came back and corrected herself on camera: "I was wrong and I'm not afraid to admit it. It is not America's first bike lift. Read it somewhere, thought I said first. Apparently I was wrong. Thanks everyone for letting me know."

She is right to correct it, and here is the accurate version. OZ Trails Bike Park is Arkansas's first lift-served bike park. It is nowhere near America's first — Mammoth in California, Trestle in Colorado, Angel Fire in New Mexico, Killington in Vermont and Snowshoe in West Virginia all predate it, and there are somewhere north of 50 lift-served parks across the US and Canada.

What is genuinely unusual is the type. Most lift-served bike parks are ski resorts running their chairs in summer. This is a purpose-built, bike-only Leitner-Poma high-speed quad — about 1,000 riders an hour — running year-round, in a state with no ski industry at all. That is the rare part, and it is a better fact than the wrong one.

The influencer traffic through it has been heavy, which I suspect is partly deliberate. If riders at that level find problems with a line, you want to know before the general public shows up. There is a base lodge with food and retail, and I expect it to pull real tourism into Bella Vista.

3. The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine

The last one is the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine on the Crystal Bridges campus, which opened to its inaugural class of 48 students in July 2025. Tuition is waived for the first five cohorts.

The building is the point of the TikTok, and fairly so. It was designed by Polk Stanley Wilcox, an Arkansas firm, with rooftop and landscape work by the New York studio OSD, and it draws its form from Ozark geology and bluff shelters. It has picked up an Architecture MasterPrize among other recognition.

None of that is a surprise if you have watched what Alice Walton builds. Crystal Bridges set the standard, and everything since has been held to it.

There is also a practical argument buried in the aesthetics. Walk into a tired hospital and you draw conclusions about the institution whether or not they are fair. A medical school that looks like it was built for the next 50 years is making a recruiting argument to faculty and students at the same time it makes an architectural one.

That it is here at all is the remarkable part. Arkansas ranks near the bottom nationally on health outcomes. A new, well-funded medical school in Bentonville is a serious attempt to change that, and it is a long game.
